On Nov. 7, a group of Visual Arts students traveled to Baltimore City to photograph various historical landmarks including Lovely Lane Methodist Church, the Baltimore Basilica, St. Ignatius Church, Peabody Library, and the Walters Art Museum. Prior to the trip, the 36 students from a variety of Visual Arts classes—Drawing, Painting, Advanced Studio, Photography, and Digital Media—had been given a historical overview of each building. They took cameras and sketchbooks to document the architecture, people, and city life that surrounded each location.
"Many of the students expressed that shooting on location in Baltimore City pushed them outside of their photographic comfort zone," said Digital Media teacher Brad Ziegler '10. "The visual variety found within walking around a city and visiting historic locations was an exciting departure from their usual subject matter."According to Ziegler, one of students' favorite spots along the way was the basement of the Basilica due to its stark light and shadow and leading lines. Other favorites included the ceiling of Lovely Lane Methodist Church with its rich Baltimore history and the repetition found within the Peabody Library.
According to Drawing and Painting instructor Virginia Petr, this is the third time in the last few years that this trip has been offered. "We will definitely plan to do it again. For now, students will use the photos they captured for several different art projects in a variety of mediums."
