On Tuesday, Oct. 13, former U.S. Navy SEAL lieutenant and author Jason Redman spoke to Loyola Blakefield students, staff, and faculty about his journey to becoming a SEAL and the adversity he overcame both before and after he was severely wounded by a near fatal shot to the face on a special ops mission in Iraq in 2007, which resulted in four years of reconstructive surgery.

He urged students to foster principles that make up an "elite performer" including leadership, teamwork, and setting goals for success. As he recalled stories from his SEAL and Army Ranger training days, he also told students to befriend those who they can depend on and to always stay humble.

Redman kept mentioning his "overcome mindset," the idea that you can and will overcome any obstacle in life so long as you have the right attitude and people surrounding you.

During a brief Q&A session, students asked questions like, "Do you believe war is necessary?" and "What was the hardest part of your training?"

After the assembly, several students gathered around Redman to shake his hand and introduce themselves.
