Loyola's ACE Mentor Program team led by Mr. Shapiro was joined by students from Maryvale Preparatory School this year. The team was made up of four Maryvale students (Jackie Kuwabara, Mary Kate Gagliardi, Caroline D’Ambrogi, and Elizabeth McCormick) and six Dons (Logan Duckwall, Gavin Rowley, Andrew Wink, Harley Hagan, Ryan Jones, and Tim Mudric).
This year, students were paired with mentors Dave Recchia of Rubeling and Associates, Courtney Mathias of Brawner Builders, and Ben Stump of Whiting Turner.
On May 11, they presented their design solution for this year’s challenge, an adaptive reuse project at the State Center in Baltimore. The event took place at Carver School for the Arts and was a great celebration of works from nine high school teams from the metro area. Notre Dame Prep took home the win, but the Loyola/Maryvale team was noted by the judges for its “thoughtful arrangement of architectural forms that made use of both new and old construction." Also, team member Elizabeth McCormick won a $2,000 ACE scholarship for college.
Their designs were on display at the Student Art Exhibition on May 14.
