Twelve rising seniors and three chaperones (Director of College Counseling Yvette Jenkins, English teacher Samantha O'Connor, and College Counseling Asst. Hillary Geremia) from Loyola Blakefield visited Camden, New Jersey last week, hosted by the Center for Environmental Transformation. The Center is a retreat house that doubles as an urban farm, the mission of which is to empower people to make better choices as they extract, produce, consume, and dispose of various comestibles and other goods. The group had the chance to spend time with and learn from the city’s residents at a variety of locations, including day shelter New Visions and community outreach centers Fellowship House and the Neighborhood Center. The Dons worked hard, helping each other as they worked to help the local community. They cleaned, painted, hauled, raked, mowed, and more. Ultimately, they recovered a real sense of spiritual discipline, and they had a fantastic time doing so.
